Greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector must be reduced to zero by 2050. For the transition to succeed, social innovations must be combined with technological innovations. Zeeland’s ambition is to transition to renewable energy as soon as possible. The business community is taking the lead in this. Several renewable energy initiatives have been set up in Zeeland. But great strides are also being made in circularity.
Plastic to fuel/feedstock
Through a circular loop, we want to turn used plastic into new raw material for high-quality plastic - to minimise waste. While there are still plenty of challenges to overcome, much effort is going into this development. There is significant potential for the ‘plastic to fuel’ sector in Zeeland. North Sea Port offers excellent opportunities for importing plastics.

Industrial symbiosis
If companies can increasingly use each other’s regular or residual materials, energy, capacity and facilities, this is a win-win for the economy and the environment. Zeeland’s chemical sector is strongly aware of this. There are many opportunities for exchanging raw material, energy and waste streams, with innovative pilots and far-reaching partnerships following each other in quick succession. Great strides are being made within Smart Delta Resources and Circular Bio-based Delta.
Hydrogen
Green hydrogen plays an important role in making the chemical industry more sustainable. Zeeland has everything that is needed to achieve this. A robust energy cluster with an impressive supply of solar and wind energy sets the ideal conditions, especially in combination with the existing hydrogen cluster – the largest in the Benelux. Both within Smart Delta Resources and Energy Port Zeeland, companies, local governments and knowledge institutions are working hard to strengthen and expand renewable energy in Zeeland.
